When the boxed series of D&D rules was published, starting with the
Beginner's Red Box in 1983, TSR did a sloppy job of editting the
existing rules which, according to sources on the Mystara Mailing List,
were already in their third edition. Several important rules which
had appeared in the 1981 edition (the third?) were lost. This page
will be used to attempt to document these lost rules. The rules will
be restated to avoid copyright infringement.
Healing by resting
Basic Rulebook '81 p.25: Wounds are healed either by resting or magic.
To heal by resting the creature must relax in a safe place and do nothing
but rest. Each full day of rest heals 1d3 hp. If the rest is interrupted,
no healing occurs.
Acid damage
Basic Rulebook '81 p.29: Acid is a special attack of gray oozes and ochre
jellies. (Editor's Note: monsters detailed in the Expert Rulebook may also
use this attack form.) The first rolled hit means the acid has reached
the skin. No additional rolls to hit are made. Damage continues automatically
until the victim is no longer in contact with the monster and the acid
is removed by washing with water or wine. However, the acid Breath Weapon
of a black dragon only causes damage for one round.
Spell disruption
Expert Rulebook '81 p.11: A spell is interrupted and lost if the caster loses
initiative and is damaged or fails a saving throw.
Damage to equipment
Expert Rulebook '81 p.24: Normal equipment is destroyed when a character is
killed by a special attack. The DM may let magic items save as the character
and may also allow the item's plusses to apply to the saving throw.
