"Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's the Lost World"
  02/01/2002

“At the dawn of the 20th Century, the survivors of a daring scientific expedition are marooned in The Lost World – stranded on a Plateau in a mysterious land where dinosaurs rule, lost civilizations flourish and the laws of nature exist side-by-side with the supernatural.

Professor George Challenger leads the expedition. A controversial scientist, called a visionary by some, and a charlatan by others, Challenger’s goal is to prove that the Lost World exists. He is joined on this expedition by three unlikely companions: Lord John Roxton, a world-renowned adventurer and big-game hunter who is haunted by the shooting death of his brother. Ned Malone is a young battle-hardened American war correspondent, for whom the fantastic nature of Challenger’s expedition is a chance to make history, not just record it. And…the enigmatic Marguerite Krux. It is her suspect fortune that has financed this expedition, though her motives remain as mysterious as her past."

Shot in Australia, now in its third season and based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tale of adventure, people around the world gather for one-hour every week to watch this fun, campy television series. With rumors that there may not be a Season four, the enthusiasm from the fans hasn’t gone dry. Let’s take a look at what the fans have to say in this two-part article! (be sure you visit back here to see Part II!)

1. How and when did you become of fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World (TLW)?

2. Who is your favorite character and why?

3. What have you heard about the rumor that the show is being cancelled?

4. If you could be any character, new or old in the show, who would you choose to be & why?

Tessa, who runs a TLW website at http:// www.geocities.com/eeyore01nl , was a bit bored one day when watching TV. “Then my eye caught a TV station where a Middle Age thing was showing (later it turned out to be the first season episode Camelot) … and I started watching. a few weeks later they showed the episode Resurrection and that was the episode which got me hooked. My favorite character is definitely Marguerite. Especially in the beginning when she really had these nasty, sarcastic remarks. Loved that. Later on in the show the remarks disappeared a bit, but sometimes there was a great line again. So I would say that the retorts Marguerite always gives is the reason why I love that character."

Steffi also runs a TLW website at http://www.geocities.com/Sternwoelkchen/TLW.html . “I’m a fan from the first episode on. Three years ago I saw [the listing] in my TV magazine and thought it was interesting so I watched it and liked it right from the beginning. I'm totally hooked! My favorite characters are Marguerite and Roxton. They're perfect for each other and both are very interesting characters. I love Marguerite's past. And Roxton is great!! They're made for each other. I've never heard about a rumor that TLW will be cancelled. I don't know what I would do then . I love it far too much!! I'm very optimistic for many more seasons! I would love to be Marguerite. She's a fantastic woman. Beautiful, independent, mysterious and so much more. She's interesting and of course she has Roxton! But I also would like to be myself and to be a friend of Marguerite and Roxton and all the others, too."

Christine D., if she were to play a character on the show, would choose Marguerite because “she is so mysterious and at the same time can be caring. And plus she has a relationship with John Roxton, he is sooo hot!" Christine’s first encounter with TLW? “I saw the pilot movie first before I watched the TV series. I love the cast, they have great chemistry between them and that's what makes the show great, better than other shows I have been watching. All of the characters are my favorites."

Cynthia would also choose Marguerite as her character on the show. Why? “Because she’s a smartass like me :D . I love her sarcastic humor. And she is gorgeous. I bought her hat she has on the show at an auction. I keep on watching because I saw this interaction between two characters on the show: Marguerite and Roxton. I am a sucker for shows where there are two people attracted to each other. And of course, I love the scenery. Beautiful location. I haven't heard anything about a rumor about the show being cancelled. It was at a point where we didn't know if we would get a season three. But season three is in full progress now, and we are hoping for a season four."

Mgr. Radovan RYBOVIC, alias UPIR The Vampire Knight, has a TLW website running at http://www.thelostworld.nfo.sk . Mgr became a fan from the books! “When I was about 8 - 10 years old, I was reading all books from edition 'STOPY' (Footprints) - it was featuring adventure books from all around the world, for young people. And one of those books was A.C. Doyle's The Lost World. It was very opular heme and magazine for young boys and girls called ABC (but not only this one) had special issue dedicated o The Lost World (it was full of information about dinosaurs, plateaus, balloons, used guns… The other comics were really great - perfect story, drawings, it's really a masterpiece. I really love Lord Roxton, he is an adventurer; he likes to walk on the dangerous side of life. And I also like Prof. Challenger - for his dino- obsession. But I think all characters of The Lost World together are united in one unique team. This is why I am not happy about Sumerlee's walk-out in the TV series." Regarding the rumors that TLW might be cancelled, Mgr’s heard “nothing, except few articles on the net. In my country - Slovakia, the second season is 'on the air', but we don't have any 'behind the scenes' information. To be honest - the TV show is far away from original idea and story. So many cultures, religions on some small plateau somewhere in Amazonia - that's impossible and episodes are little bit naive and unrealistic. But this is the price for long-lasting TV series. I hope we will have more seasons. If Mgr could be any character, he would be a “be mix of Lord Roxton and Ned Malone - adventurer who is able to describe all the great things from the lost world and share all of his adventures with his readers. Something like: Captain America meets Albert Schweitzer :) “

Check out Carrie’s TLW website . She became “a fan during the end of season one -- it was just something to watch before dinner at my grandparents’ house on Sundays. Before, when I've seen promos, I was like ‘Oh right - dino's -big deal!’ but then Ii watched some episodes and totally got drawn in by the characters and became a big fan of the show. Marguerite is her favorite character “because there are so many sides to her character -- so much we don’t know about her yet. She's a survivor and a strong woman. She does what she wants, but really does care about her friends…and Rachel's just a great actress. I did [hear cancellation rumors] at the end of last season but we have a season three so I'm just hopeful."
