"Look Into My Crystal Ball"
  10/15/2000

Since it's that Halloweeny time of year, I thought I'd try my hand at a little psychic mediumship. Don't worry! I won't cheat and ask a certain producer/writer known in the Buffyverse as His Jossness what's up with some of our favorite characters. It's a lot more fun to pull out those Tarot cards, to throw a few runes, to read a few tea leaves, to ask a black cat or to figure out the curds and... well, you get the picture.

What's up with Spike?

Is the Big Bad Slayer-whipped? Sure, he still has that buggery chip in his head that prevents his vamp self from harming another living creature (the emergency surgery obviously didn't work). So is a slayer/Big Bad relationship in the works? There have been tantalizing hints: Riley commenting that Buffy needs a more powerful guy by her side like Spike, not some normal Joe (Riley's whining is tired at this point). Also, there was that "dream" Spike had about Buffy. Is it his unconscious wishful thinking? Spike was painfully wounded when he overheard Buffy teasing about how fun it might be to stake him. Clearly, no one can push him over the edge like Buffy.

So what do the tea leaves say? A Slayer/ chippery vamp romance in the works? Possibly, but only if Spike is given that one opportunity for redemption and either becomes a white hat or, far more likely in Buffyworld, an ambiguous white hat. Riley will probably be off the series by
mid-season, but that's not tea leaves. The producers have strongly hinted at this. Hopefully, something will come from these delicious hints. I'd hate to see Spike pass the season watching endless soap operas on that crappy t.v. in his crip.

What's Tara's secret?

After Tara messed up that spell regarding identifying the demons, etc. in Sunnydale, gossip has been intense on the posting boards. Is she a demon? Is she evil? And more hints were dropped at the beginning of this season. When Willow commented, 'You're one of the good guys.' Tara's face fell and she turned away. So the intrigue around the secret grows.

But is she bad? Was she afraid that she'd be identified as a demon or vamp when she did that spell? My tea leaves say that she was afraid that one of her parents would be tagged. We know that Tara's mom has some witchly powers. What if dad was a vampire who decided to keep the family together despite his vamp status? What if Tara and her mom lived on egg shells, not knowing if daddy would go out on another one of his vamp benders? What if Tara and mom had to learn witchcraft to keep dad's evil side at bay? It might explain Tara's painfully shy and nervous side and may make for some fascinating subtext when Tara's parents finally meet Willow. Of course, when daddy meets Willow he won't approve. He won't approve of Tara's lifestyle of hanging with Willow and not for the romantic reason, but the fact that Willow's the Slayer's best friend!

Who knows what will actually happen? However, I'm willing to bet, knowing Joss and his talented team, that we'll all be gasping and going, "No way!" Happy Halloween.
