"Doing the Wild Thing"
  06/01/2000

I had to smile recently when I read an amusing question in Vanity Fair. "What do you get when you cross a medieval alchemist with a gorgeous twenty year old?" Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Right on! Have I told you how much I've enjoyed these two shows this season? I love the likeable characters, fast paced action, witty dialogue and the lightly pedaled humanistic message.

In the episode, Where the Wild Things Are, Buffy and Riley make them selves scarce during a party thrown by the guys at Riley's house. It seems Buffy and Riley have more … uhhh… "pressing" needs and decide to hole up in his room. I guess none of us can relate can we? :)

Since this is Buffy, it takes more than lust to keep the plot moving or demons churning, or does it? Riley and Buffy unleash some repressed spirits in the house after their non-stop lovemaking.

The effects and set ups are excellent. A dripping shower faucet with eerie sound effects, and a fireplace exploding on one of Riley's roommates sets up a nail biting hour of spirit world mayhem. As Buffy's friends realize that Buffy and Riley may be antagonizing the spirits, they unsuccessfully attempt to stop to their love fest facing obstacle after obstacle trying to get into Riley's room.

Well, it doesn't take a shrink to recognize a symbolic treatise on the positive aspects of college lust. However, when I was in college, most of my girlfriends and I experienced our nightmare horror fests with images of mom breaking into our rooms unexpectedly with an axe and taking out our boyfriends. So life is a little more relaxed in the new millennium. Good for us!

Besides a slight film noir attitude, this episode had some stunning music and visuals which raised my adrenaline level. And the charming subplot between ex-demon Anya and Spike had me smiling. The good part of her wants to stay with Xander and the bad part of her wants Spike, but she has fun convincing herself that this is okay because Xander doesn't "really like her." And the talk between Willow and Tara about horses was sweet and genuine.

I won't tell you how it all ends. Be sure to catch it during the dog days of summer.

Angel has been a treat to watch all year. There is something captivating about the decent, but brooding Angel which keeps me tuning in each week. Cordelia is a great foil for Mr. Brooding. Her lighthearted, gleefully  shallow values will make you laugh out loud a few times each episode.

The more I see her and Angel interact, the more I think she may be his perfect woman. Angel's curse is that he can't fall in love without resorting to his evil vampire ways, but he misses human companionship. Cordelia could be the answer to his prayers. He could have an intense case of "like" with her, but she'll always retain that edge of shallowness, preventing him from truly falling in love with her. Can you spell the perfect L.A. relationship? The only drawback? Cordelia may not approve of his nutritional requirements. But who ever said they should eat together? :)
